On this page we will try to gather the various photographs, illustrations, and portraits of Gottschalk. For a 19th century artist, there are quite a lot. When he was on tour, girls tried to get autographed photos of their idol in the same way as today's stars.
Illustrations and caricatures were generally drawn to show the manners but also the virtuosity of Gottschalk.
Those shown here are mainly from the book of Francisco Curt Lange, "Vida Y Muerte de Louis Moreau Gottschalk en Rio de Janeiro. Many others are certainly still hidden in South American newspapers.

Gottschalk was photographed many times. The majority of sources comes from the United States for the years 1853, 1855-1857, 1862-1865 and from Brazil for 1869.
Youth - (1845-1853)
Gottschalk started his fame in 1849 when Escudier published la Bamboula. Le Bananier followed thereafter and was a huge success. The first portrait dates from this era. After his european triumphs, Gottschalk is firmly awaited in New York where he lands in 1853. To make american people familiar with this glorious compatriot, several portraits are realised this year. The success is unfortunately not as expected. Hence, after a quite financially catastrophic year, Gottschalk sails for Havana in february 1854.

American Tours (1856-1865)
We have found few photographs from the years 1855-1860, except perhaps the one in which he has sideburns, despite the triumphs of the concerts with Thalberg in 1856. Indeed, according to several sources of photographs (though these should be treated with caution), Gottschalk seems to have been more portrayed after returning from the Caribbean early 1862. In any case, after 1861, he only wore a moustache. At first thin and sharp-ended, it will thicken over the years.
On his last return to North America, Gottschalk shows off everywhere his big gold medal. He received many from his admirers : from his New Orleans fellows in 1853, his friends in San Francisco in 1865, in Lima, Montevideo and Buenos Aires in 1868 ... He will also have numerous decorations as pins, medallions ... Just for Spain, he is Knight of the Order of Charles III, of Isabella the catholic, of the Order of the Lion of Limburg.
We tried to classify the following pictures in chronological order.

Last years (1866-1869)
The portraits corresponding to the end of Gottschalk's life show a puffed-up face. He still proudly displays all his medals.
